I would love to say that my career and the educational path are the stuff of fairy tales, like Cinderella and her glass slipper, the end! However, life isn’t as easy as that and it involves a lot of setbacks and rejections. I know at times I’ve felt so defeated and worthless, it’s really knocked me for six - I’ve felt unconfident and I didn’t believe in myself. Simon Cowell’s words, “It’s a no from me!” may sound comical, but to be honest, I’d gotten so used to that response that a “yes” response still takes me by surprise!

The Arden Reading Society is a student-led extracurricular group which meets to discuss a new book every three weeks.

The Reading Society meets on alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7pm (BST) via Zoom to discuss everything from classic fiction to topical nonfiction, poetry to plays.

“Change is situational. Transition, on the other hand, is psychological. It is not those events but rather the inner reorientation or self-redefinition that you have to go through in order to incorporate any of those changes into your life.”

At the weekend, I dusted off my trainers and managed to complete a half-marathon.

This wasn’t my first rodeo: several years ago, I had been a very enthusiastic runner and completed two half-marathons. I slipped out of practice though (long commutes will tend to do that) and my running shoes lay neglected in a corner of my flat for years. It was only recently, eager to find ways of seeing people while still keeping COVID-safe, I tentatively ventured back to my local parkrun and the rest is history.

Great paid opportunities available for existing Arden students to work with the Arden Library team to contribute to the provision of excellent quality teaching materials.

The role

We have a number of opportunities for students to work on a part-time basis, as Student Data Ambassadors alongside the Library team and module tutors.

This week, we asked our friends and colleagues across Arden's study centres to share what they're currently reading. We received so many submissions - reflecting such a plurality of tastes and genres - that it only feels right to compile them into one blog post.

We very much hope you find something to enjoy in this list.
