I had already finished most of my studies before I got my ADHD diagnosis. By that point, I had adopted a number of coping mechanisms and also abandoned several along the way. I wish someone had told me that to be successful I didn’t have to study like ‘everyone else’ and that if what I was doing worked for me then that was fine! Whilst it is useful to know the ‘rules’, individuality is so important in moving academic discussion forward. If everyone has the same ideas and style, then nothing new will be created.

It has been a relatively short time since Generative Artificial Intelligence (henceforth, we shall call it “GenAI”) started shaking the foundations of academic writing—its methods, integrity, and  expectations—like a storm. As an Academic Skills Tutor working for a higher education institution where both instruction and assessment are heavily dependent on academic writing, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I said I am reporting from the eye of the storm, and I have to admit; it hasn’t been a smooth ride so far!
